If Balasana was about surrender, Kapalbhati is about cleansing.
In Sanskrit, Kapal means skull, Bhati means shining. It is a breathing technique that makes your skull shine from inside – not with oil, but with clarity.
If your mind feels foggy, if you feel heavy after waking up, this 5-minute practice can change your whole day.
What is Kapalbhati?
Kapalbhati is not normal breathing. It is a Shatkarma – a cleansing technique in yoga. You inhale passively and exhale forcefully through your nose using your stomach muscles.
It cleans stale air, toxins and negative thoughts from your body.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Best Time: Early morning on empty stomach
Duration: 3 rounds of 30 strokes each
How To Do Kapalbhati – Step-by-Step For Beginners
- Sit in Sukhasana or Padmasana. Keep spine straight, hands on knees.
- Close your eyes. Take 2 deep breaths to relax.
- Inhale deeply through nose.
- Now exhale forcefully by pulling your stomach IN. Your navel should go towards spine. Air will come out automatically.
- Don’t worry about inhale – it will happen automatically. Focus only on exhale.
- Do this 20-30 times – this is 1 round.
- After 1 round, breathe normally for 30 seconds.
- Repeat for 3 rounds. Total 90 strokes.
Watch: Your chest should NOT move. Only your belly should move in and out.
7 Powerful Benefits of Kapalbhati
- For Weight Loss & Belly Fat: Kapalbhati is the best pranayama for belly fat. The stomach pumping burns fat and tones abs.
- Improves Digestion & Glowing Skin: Increases digestive fire (jatharagni). When stomach is clean, skin glows automatically.
- Removes Brain Fog: Brings more oxygen to brain. You feel more focused and energetic in 5 minutes.
- For Hair Fall: Many people report reduced hair fall with regular practice because it improves blood circulation to scalp.
- Cleans Lungs: Removes stale air and strengthens lungs. Very helpful for people who sit all day.
- Balances Sugar & Cholesterol: Regular practice helps in managing metabolism.
- Releases Negative Emotions: As you exhale forcefully, you also throw out stress and anger.
When NOT To Do Kapalbhati – Important Precautions
Do NOT do Kapalbhati if you have:
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart disease or recent heart surgery
- Pregnancy – strictly avoid
- Hernia, gastric ulcer, slip disc
- Had recent abdominal surgery
- During periods (first 2 days)
- If you feel dizzy, stop immediately
Always do on empty stomach. Keep a gap of 3 hours after eating.
Common Mistakes Beginners Make
- Moving shoulders and chest – only belly should move
- Doing it too fast in first week – start slow, 20 strokes only
- Doing forceful inhale – inhale is passive, exhale is active
- Doing at night – it makes you energetic, you won’t sleep
How Long To See Results?
If you do daily for 5 minutes empty stomach:
- Energy boost: Day 1
- Better digestion: 1 week
- Belly toning: 3-4 weeks
Consistency is more important than speed.
